“Reducing maintenance costs by upgrading bearings has been an exciting process. Upgrading to CeramicSpeed Bearings has had a significant effect for us. Even though the cost of the bearings is higher, we’ve saved a lot of money over 13 months”, states Jens Andersen, an engineer at Rold Skov sawmill, who is responsible for purchasing bearings.

It cost Rold Skov sawmill approximately 2,700 EUR every time they had to stop production in order to replace the saw’s bearings. This was necessary every three months.

Working together with the maintenance staff from the sawmill we proposed installing CeramicSpeed LongLife Xtreme Bearings.

The purchase price of CeramicSpeed Bearings is higher than that of steel bearings, but despite this the company saved over 2,700 EUR on bearing purchase alone. Including the indirect costs of production stoppages the company saved 14,750 EUR during the first 13 months.


Plastics manufacturer: Bearing life increased 23 times

Plastic dust is one of the challenges that threaten the service life of bearings, an issue that one of Europe’s leading plastics manufacturers has experienced.

Mounted in ovens where the plastic film is extruded 24 hours a day, the bearings are facing a harsh environment, where the temperature varies between 150 °C – 170 °C. Running at an average of 12-15 start/stop cycles per minute, followed by vibrations, no air circulation and plastic dust, the bearing life of a steel bearing is about 2 weeks.

Machine crashes caused by bearing failures have huge economic implications, as the oven must be cooled before any bearing can be replaced. Each operation of this kind means a loss caused by a 6 -7-hour downtime period, every second week.

Back in 2004, the first CeramicSpeed Bearings were delivered to the company for a testing period of 14 weeks. After the 14 weeks, the bearings were checked, and no signs of wear were found.

Thanks to the positive results, CeramicSpeed has further optimised the bearings with different cages and a new special lubricant.

Today, the CeramicSpeed Bearings feature a service life of 55-75 weeks. In spite of the higher purchase price of ceramic bearings, the investment is recovered already after the bearing life has been extended by 2 to 3 times.

Thanks to the replacement with CeramicSpeed Bearings, which are specially developed with a focus on the specific application, the bearing life is now 23 times higher than before.
